Historically, from 2001 until 2012, Malta Unemployment Rate averaged 6.83 Percent reaching an all time high of 8.24 Percent in September of 2003 and a record low of 5.88 Percent in September of 2008. In Malta, the unemployment rate measures the number of people actively looking for a job as a percentage of the labour force. In November 2011, the registered unemployment rate stood at 4.2 per cent of the labour supply (excluding part-timers): 5.0 per cent for men and 2.7 per cent for women. This rate stood at 4.5 per cent among persons aged 45 and over, and 5.1 per cent for persons aged less than 25.
